Conor Benn revealed his “disappointment” at Pete Dobson’s performance throughout their fight on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
Benn was awarded scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110 at the conclusion of their 12-round welterweight fight, and while the 27 year old is continuing to rebuild his career – Dobson was his second opponent after almost 18 months’ inactivity triggered by his failing a drugs test in the build-up to his cancelled fight with Chris Eubank Jr – he didn’t make the statement he was under pressure to.
He previously outpointed Rodolfo Orozco in September, and of his latest fight, said: “It wasn’t as if he was defensive-minded, it was as if he didn’t want to engage. He didn’t commit to any shots. He was tough, and that’s all there was to it.
“There wasn’t much to [the fight]; I have had harder spars. I was very disappointed. Given that [he said he was] a dog, ‘I am from The Bronx’, you heard, and all that talk and didn’t engage. It is hard to get the knockout when you try to draw someone into a fight, and there was nothing coming back.”
According to CompuBox Benn landed nearly double the number of punches Dobson did in the first four rounds but struggled to hurt him. Dobson, 33 and who lost for the first time, equalled or outlanded Benn’s power-punch total in three of the final four rounds.
“It was really easy work,” Benn continued. “It was easy work.” He has since listed Devin Haney, Eubank Jr, Errol Spence, Kell Brook and Mario Barrios as opponents he would like to fight next.
